Cape Town Digest - food, wine, and places to stay
|
| Cape Town Digest is the official propaganda wing of Holiday Rentals Cape Town, www.rentalscapetown.com. We live in Cape Town and love it and want to tell you about what we get up to and what's good about our town so that you'll come and visit it.
Going out to good restaurants, discovering great fresh produce, bread, meat, cheeses and wine; visiting the areas around Cape Town that lovingly farm and produce this stuff are what we like doing a lot. |

Long doughnuts after a long walk: Vida e Caffe, Camps Bay |
|
Long doughnuts after a long walk: Vida e Caffe, Camps Bay I first saw this coffee shop on Kloof St across from Naked on Kloof, the cult wrap and smoothie shop, that I used to frequent and even do evening shifts at. What was it about muffins and coffee that attracted all those cool people lounging around as if they were on a break from the making of an i-Pod commercial?
Me and Miles were on foot in Camps Bay. We'd been ousted from the house where we had just had a violin lesson and had two or so hours to kill before Rose came to fetch us. After scrabbling down steep suburban short cuts we broke out of the vegetation and scurried into Vida e Caffe, narrowly missing a cold downpour. The order was a compromise: Miles was not in a muffin mood but liked the look of the long, massive doughnutty Farturas. So did I: R8.50 for a substantial piece of dough that was chewy, not too sweet, with a nice nutmeg and cinammon flavour. I was kind enough to share the little Lindt dark chocolate that comes with every coffee. I think Rosemary has a handbag full of them including the rare mint flavoured ones handed out only to pretty girls. The coffee if drunk in store is good and add on about R2 if you want their organic blend. You will have no idea that this is offered unless you notice green branding on their vans and around the shop.. If you enjoy your coffee out of the confines of the shop then the only way to get it drinkable is to pay for another shot to strengthen up the mix in the larger volume paper cup. Or stand and watch the barrista driving the big computerised machine and urge him to put less water in your cup. It is a shame that with so much software and hardware that a simple cup of coffee gets ruined just because it is made in a paper cup that has a larger capacity than the sit down cup. If you are just dishing out stuff from a pour over machine this wouldn't happen but the whole idea is super grade coffee at super grade prices and little details like this should be taken care of. Do you want to stay in Camps Bay? Of course you do: http://www.rentalscapetown.com/index.php/articles/Rentals+Cape+Town+Articles/Camps+Bay+Area |
