Cape Town Digest - food, wine, and places to stay
|
| Cape Town Digest is the official propaganda wing of Holiday Rentals Cape Town, www.rentalscapetown.com. We live in Cape Town and love it and want to tell you about what we get up to and what's good about our town so that you'll come and visit it.
Going out to good restaurants, discovering great fresh produce, bread, meat, cheeses and wine; visiting the areas around Cape Town that lovingly farm and produce this stuff are what we like doing a lot. |

Cape Town Digest {Survival through food and wine}
|
Caveau: Wine Bar and Deli, Heritage Square, Buitengracht St, Cape Town, South Africa The Food: 6 pieces of sushi- 4 short cylinders with the rice and seaweed sheets rolled around salmon, and 2 with seaweed sheet around tuna. Cost about R70. Lots of thin pink ginger and wasabi. Tasted nice & fresh.
Spaetzle with a cheese and mushroom sauce- they do a selection of hand made pasta.
The sauce was rich and creamy without being heavy. Large cubes of mild feta and lots of buttery/nutty sliced mushroom. Just right to the chew. Good flavours and satifying dish. Cost R52.
Most of the main items are R80 to R 120 : steak, lamb, fish. Caveau excels in their handmade pasta, soup and deli selection. You can build a sandwich with exotic cheeses and meats but beware: the cost can shoot into the main course range if you go for lots of fillings.
The wine list offers many wines by the glass: starting price is about R22. Being a wine bar they don't allow the bringing of your own wine and charging a corkage. This always results in our bill being made up in equal parts of food and alchohol costs- but we get to taste 3 or 4 new wines.
What makes Caveau special? The secret garden-like feel of the courtyard. It is set in a cluster of old Cape Town buildings collectively called Heritage Square: there are potted lemon trees, a tinkly little water feature, a gnarled and ancient vine. It's like climbing into a big old wardrobe and coming out in an enchanted place with a blackboard in front of you offering you nice things to eat. |

Foraging for ideas at the Bandwidth Barn
Just “stepping out” from the Idea Workshop at the Bandwidth Barn in Cape Town. 3 gruelling days of school and instant coffee. Why do Rose and I subject ourselves to this? Because holiday accommodation isn’t just about comfy beds and views of sugar white beaches from decks of exotic timber. Its about silicon, high tech, [...]

Perfect Sea Point morning
An appointment to see a Sea Point studio on the beach front went awry so we ended up sitting here sipping coffee from polystyrene coffee cups at the the tent of coffee and all day breakfast next to the Sea Point Pavilion. Wonder at the almost real time nature of the photograph. Just a 5 [...]

One Off White
Well we weren’t going to drink anything tonight (being a Sunday night we try to be fresh for Monday even though we work from home). But unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately as I really enjoyed it – we decided to have a glass. Another well priced option – this time One Off White from Woolworths – [...]
